Melati Suryodarmo (Indonesia)

Melati Suryodarmo born 1969 in Surakarta Indonesia, lives and works since 1994 in Braunschweig, Germany. She is graduated in International Relations and Political Sciences in Bandung, Indonesia before started her study at the Hochschule fuer Bildende Kuenste Braunschweig with Anzu Furukawa (Butoh and choreography), Mara Mattuschka (time based) and Marina Abramovic (performance art and Raum Konzept). She is graduated in Fine Art, and finished her MFA in 2002 in Performance Art. Melati Suryodarmo´s performances concern with cultural, social and political aspects, in which she articulates through her psychological and physical body. Her performances features elements physical presence and visual art to talk about identity, energy, politics and relationships between the body and the environments surrounding it. The arrangement overtones to her performances were simple but give the pieces an edgy closeness to the audience. In her performances, she uses specific objects, which are abstracting her conceptual thoughts but at the same time bringing the public into the daily facts. Suryodarmo’s performance art works are mostly a long durational performance art, but also a short durational ones such the “Exergie-butter dance”.
